Most teams spend time obsessing over the performance metrics of their windows (or pick the lowest cost window and foam it in). While window metrics do matter, the install matters even more and is always the weak link.

This is an example of a simple, high performance install of direct set windows in a block wall rough opening. No matter the performance level of your windows, this install will boost their performance, durability and mold resistance.

Start with a well sloped will and coat all the block in Pro Clima Visconn . Most teams prefer the bucket format and applying with a brush. When installing the window, make sure to get a proper gap around all 4 sides.

This install uses a single tape on the interior side. It’s a special tape that works in most climates; Pro Clima Contega Solido-IQ . One nice trick is to start at the corners with a special corner fold. Corners are always the weak link. This pressure activated tape is easy to position but then sticks for life once activated with a Pressfix tool.

Apply to all 4 sides and pressurize.

Once all 4 sides are sealed up from the inside, loose pack Havelock Wool into the shim space from the exterior. This will add insulation, keep the bugs out and manage moisture.

From here you can either finish with a vapor open exterior tape or use the wool as a backer for a typical caulking install. The wool and interior tape helps elevate the performance of more typical finishing methods.
