Recommendation: Avoid

Coated paper facing was added to the interior side of fiberglass insulation to act as an airtight and vapor control layer. The intent was primarily to add efficiency (through air tightness) and keep winter moisture out of walls. Unfortunately the vapor profile wasn’t quite right the install requirements were rarely followed (they are hard to get right in the field) and the paper facing led to far more condensation issues than saved energy.

Notes

  • It’s still fiberglass.

  • The paper facing did little to nothing to increase efficiency over standard fiberglass.

  • The paper facing lead to a significant increase in durability issues.

  • Fiberglass is nasty to install, decently full of chemicals and the paper facing leads to many failures that are risky to remediate.
